Find Your Power Through Financial Freedom

I recently came across an article by financial guru, Suze Orman, about “What Money Has Taught Me About Personal Power.” Throughout the article she touches upon some excellent points I feel can apply to anyone's life. Regardless of how much you make, what debt you have, or whatever else has happened in your life, you can take back your power and not let money control you.

Out of the six topics she touches upon in her piece, the two that stood up to me were: 1) Do what’s right, not what’s easy and 2) How you respect your possessions says a lot about how you respect yourself.

Do What’s Right, Not What’s Easy. She touches upon some excellent points in this section because it is so easy to run up credit card debt. Suze Orman suggests you ask yourself three questions: Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it true? And you should answer yes to all three questions before lending money or cosigning on anything.

How You Respect Your Possessions Says A Lot About How You Treat Yourself. I found this one to be extremely interesting because as the saying go, your outer world reflects your inner world. In the piece, she advises you ask yourself what were you feeling the last time you bought your last item? How did it make you feel?

While you get in touch with your inner power surrounding money, now is a good time to clean out all the clutter in your home and reclaim your power tips through feng shui.

3 Habits for a Happier Life

The Dalai Lama once said, “Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.” But how do you increase the happiness in your life? Here are 3 habits to incorporate for a happier life:
1. Gratitude. Studies have shown that people who express gratitude on a daily basis are a lot happier than people who do not. It was also shown that people who performed an act of kindness for someone else (no matter how small) were happier. So the next time you are prone to complain, start counting your blessing and you’ll start noticing everything you have to be thankful for.
2. Actively pursue your goals. People with goals and who are working towards them are 19% more likely to feel satisfied with their lives. While you are pursuing your goals, remember, don’t compare yourself to others. As the saying goes, you cannot compare your chapter one to another’s middle. To help stay inspired, set measurable goals and keep track of your progress. Each day you do something in line with your aspirations is one day closer to achieving your dreams.
3. Surround yourself with good people. One of my favorite quotes is: “You become like the 5 people you spend the most time with. Choose carefully.” If you want to be happier and more positive, than you should surround yourself with those kind of people. If you hang out with negative people who are there to put you down, you aren’t going to live the life you were meant to have. Life is too short to live it unhappy.

3 Idioms and Their Origins

Have you heard the idiom, “cat got your tongue?” There are so many we use nowadays that have you ever wondered where they came from? Here are 3 idioms and where they came from:

Bite the bullet. First recorded in 1891, this saying came from the days when doctors were short on anesthesia or time during battle. Doctors would have the patient bite down on a bullet to distract from the pain.

Turn a blind eye. This idiom comes from the British Naval hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, who had one blind eye. Rumor has it, when British forces signaled to him to stop attacking Danish ships, he held his telescope to his blind eye and said, “I do not see the signal.” He continued his attack and was victorious.

Give a cold shoulder. During the medieval ages, giving a cold piece of meat to a guest was the polite way to let them know it was time for them to leave.

How to Feng Shui Your Home

Since the 1990s, Feng Shui has grown more popular in the United States. Some people think that Feng Shui is a religion, but is not a religion, but the practice of arranging your environment in a way that makes you feel good. We've all been in an area that just didn't “feel” right.

There are many tips for feng shui but the best place to start is with a bagua which is a tool for mapping out the energies in your home. Feng Shui is a great principle to use when working to unclutter your life through noticing the items in your life that no longer serve you so you can let them go. What you are considering what you should keep and what you should throw ask yourself questions. One question I always ask myself before making purchase or giving something away is, do I love it? If you don’t absolutely love it, why are you holding on to it?

4 DIY Projects to Improve Your Home's Value

There is a lot of pride that goes into owning your own home. Not only is homeownership a great investment, but it can add a sense of belonging. While you can add little additions to your home, like a spa or fire pit, to make your place more inviting.

No matter how much you take care of your home, keeping up with repairs is important. Here are 4 simple DIY projects you can do to keep your home looking its best.
  1. Add a fresh coat of paint to your door. Painting your door cannot only enhance your home’s appeal and can make your home inviting.
  2. Maintain a healthy lawn. It is amazing how much a well kept lawn can improve the look of your home. Take time to make sure your lawn is aerated, mowed, and watered.
  3. Keep your walkways clean of debris.  Pressure washers are a great tool to get the debris off your pathway to keep them looking their best and minimizing any accidents.
  4. Install Safety lights. Floodlight or landscape lighting is perfect for adding a little extra safety to your home along with showing off the beauty of your home at night. Floodlights are a great to accent focal points in your yard as well as highlight favorite flowers and shrubs.
What are some things you've done to improve your home’s appearance? The more you take pride in your home and protect it from the everyday wear and tear, the better your investment will be when you sale.

Have You Cleaned Your Curtains Lately?

When was the last time you cleaned your curtains, shades or drapes? It is easy to neglect these, but a regular cleaning is important to keeping your home smelling its best. Sometimes a simple dusting will do the trick with a vacuum hose. Vacuuming is also a great way to keep your fabrics clean so you won’t have to wash them often.

However, washing your draperies is still needed to keep them looking their best. If your curtains are made out of a synthetic fabric a good soaking in cold water will help dissolve the dust.

Hand washing is the preferable method, but if you must wash your curtains in the machine, it is recommended you put them in a pillowcase to protect them. Make sure when running them through the washing machine you use the delicate cycle. Woolite is my preference when washing my curtains, but hand soap is another great alternative (especially when washing delicate draperies. To avoid colors fading from your well matched curtains, try adding a pinch of salt to the water. Salt can also help with any yellowing, just allow the curtains to soak overnight before washing. Another fun tip, to give your curtains a wonderful smell, put a few drops of your favorite essential oil into the water.

Remember to never put your drapes in the dryer, air drying is ideal for giving them time to drip dry. If you hang them while they are still wet (obvious, I know, but sometimes things happen and we forget) so you won’t have to iron them.

What are some of your best cleaning tips when it comes to drapes? How often do you wash your curtains?

5 Ways to Prepare for Tax Season

Tax season is only a few months away and now is the time to prepare to avoid any surprises. Take time to save money on your income taxes by taking these simple actions into account before the end of the year (Remember: As with all tax matters, consult your tax professional first).

1. Make charitable contributions. Contributions you make to charities before year-end can be deducted for 2014. Donations charged to a credit card by Dec. 31 are deductible even if you don't pay the bill until 2015. Gift checks need to be mailed in December.

2. Contribute to retirement accounts. You need to contribute to a 401(k) or similar retirement plan by Dec. 31. But you have until April 15, 2015, to set up a new IRA or add money to an existing one.

3. Contribute to a flexible spending account (FSA). The money you put into an employer-sponsored FSA can be used for qualified health or dependent care expenses and reduces your taxable income.

4. Defer income. Shift income into 2015 and you won't have to pay taxes on it this year. Ask your employer to pay out any year-end bonus in January instead of December; delay selling investments with taxable gains until next year; don't take distributions from an IRA or other retirement account until the beginning of the year. If self-employed, ask clients to pay you after the first of the year.

5. Accelerate deductions. Bring as many deductible expenses into this year as possible. Pay medical bills, property tax, and college tuition, if applicable. If you make estimated state tax payments, send in your last one in December instead of January. Sell investments that have lost value, so you can deduct the losses on this year's return. If self-employed, purchase needed business equipment before year end.

Please note that if you expect to be in a higher tax bracket in 2015, you might want to accelerate income into this year and defer deductions until next year. As with all tax matters, consult your tax professional first.
